Alpenzu Grande

The itinerary consists of a pleasant walk on the orographic right of the Gressoney valley, now in the woods, now on the pastures, touching on the villages of Alpenzù piccolo and Alpenzù grande, where the Walser architecture has been wonderfully preserved.

In the background is the grandiose spectacle of the Monte Rosa massif. The two villages lie on the route of the Great Walser Trail, the route taken by the transalpine peoples who migrated to the Aosta Valley through the mountains from the 12th century onwards.

Near the locality of Lysbalma, just before the main town, take the path, marked W, that branches off from the regional road and leads into the steep mixed coniferous forest above. The path meanders along the ridge to reach the village of Alpenzù piccolo. From here, continue on the trail through the pastures, gaining altitude and crossing the Pinter stream. Lower yourself a little and continue along the undulating trail until you reach the village of Alpenzù grande. Near the chapel, take the trail that descends in hairpin bends down the steep slope to the hamlet of Chemonal, in the municipality of Gressoney-Saint-Jean.
