Weissmatten

between history and the outdoors

Weissmatten

Weissmatten is not just winter sports; in summer the area around the ski resort is transformed, offering a wide range of opportunities for hiking enthusiasts and others. As in winter, it is served by the two-seater chairlift, which is also enabled to transport bicycles in summer.

For those who feel like walking, the arrival of the lift can be reached on foot from path No. 2, which starts near the Ronken ski lift, or by e-biking along the asphalt road that arrives in the hamlet of Cialvrina and then continues on the dirt road.

At the top of the station you will be welcomed by the managers of the Mollino Refuge, opened in December 2014 it is a modern reinterpretation of Walser architecture designed by the famous Turin architect Carlo Mollino.

The Refuge offers Bar and Restaurant service and also has a beautiful terrace overlooking the adjacent reservoir.

The most beautiful walks from Weissmatten

Once you get to the top of the lift, where the Mollino hut is located you will have the choice of stopping here and enjoying a snack and fresh air, or choose from among the itineraries that have this splendid place as a starting point.

If you are not great walkers but you want to enjoy a splendid view of the town of Gressoney-Saint-Jean and Monte Rosa you can take the 3a marker and walk a short section of it, you will arrive in the Prato Bianco area, a charming grassy plain set in a small basin and continuing a short distance you will land on balconies that overlook the town giving you a unique panorama.

If you plan to continue, past a section of trail that is slightly exposed but equipped with fixed ropes you will come to a fork in the trail.

To the right of the fork, path 3b will take you to the beautiful Ranzola Pass from where your view will sweep across the Gressoney and Champoluc Valleys. Choosing at the fork to go left and then continuing on trail 3a will bring you to the Colle della Garda, from here taking care you may decide to continue via trail 9 that leads to the Frudière Lakes.

Trail 3a, a few meters below Colle della Garda continues on the right halfway up the hillside leading to Punta Regina as does trail 7a from Colle Ranzola.

Punta Regina is perhaps one of the most striking viewpoints we have in the Gressoney Valley, named after Queen Margherita who used to venture along these trails to enjoy the magnificent view of the valley and its Castle.

Another splendid route that starts from the Mollino Refuge is Trail 1a, which leads to the beautiful Frudière Lakes (also reachable from Trail 9).

From the Mollino Refuge if you don't want to descend by lift you can choose to take Trail 2 which leads down to the valley or if you are riding your MTB from the dirt road and then from Cialvrina continue on the paved road.
