Gressoney Valley

Walser nature and culture at the foot of Monte Rosa

By: Gressoney Monterosa

La Valle di Gressoney

From the vineyards at the bottom of the valley to the glaciers of Monte Rosa, the Gressoney Valley winds for 30 km along the course of the river Lys, crossing ancient villages that have kept their original charm.
A strong nature surrounds it with imposing coniferous forests that change color with the seasons.
The bond with Monte Rosa is very strong for the inhabitants of Gressoney who, around 1400, crossed the glaciers coming from Valais, in Switzerland.
This is the Walser people who, courageously and in search of new territories, settled in what are now the two Gressoneys: Saint-Jean and La-Trinité.
Two fascinating communities in which the testimony of their history is still breathed today: from the architecture with the typical stadel, to the Titsch language, from the food and wine to the traditions.
It is the realm of the outdoors, both contemplative like walking or snowshoeing in winter and active like on-piste and off-piste skiing, mountain biking and mountaineering.
Gressoney is part of a large area, the Monterosa Ski, which unites it with the Val d'Ayas and Valsesia in Piedmont.
